Back – And a Recap

August 8, 2009

We are back from our trip.

Unlike half the people in Toronto who went to Europe this year, ours was something on the way to Bangladesh. We touched into Italy, spent a gorgeous week there, and then was off. And what a gorgeous week it was. Now Mona and I are a filmy couple (as in we love Bollywood), so our itinerary was mostly directed by “Oh-they-shot-this-movie-here!” – this is how we found ourselves in Capri, Italy, on a day trip from Rome, just because they shot ONE scene of ONE song from Bachna Ae Haseeno! Not that we regretted it – Capri and its Blue Grotto was simply too marvelous for words.

Now I am not a good travel journal writer like Liya or Nadia, so I am not going to try writing about my experiences – there’s just too many to list! :-D

But I will say this, EVERY one should visit Italy once in their lifetime!

We met Bangladeshis everywhere in Rome. They were all over! We couldn’t even talk on the bus in Bengali lest someone overhear us (our favourite time pass on long bus train rides was to pass comments on everyone else! :-) as well as sleep). I was on the bus saying “God I don’t know which stop to get off for the Vatican” and there was one Bengali guy directing us. Any street vendor was almost Bengali and would give us half price off once he found out we were Bengali too. One of our games became “Spot the Bangladeshi” in town squares.

They had amazing stories to say and would start talking once you spoke to them in Bengali. Most of them had come through smugglers and people traffickers illegally into Italy. It was poignant that it’s just an accident of birth that meant we were tourists in Rome with money to burn while our fellow countrymen were ‘illegals’ trying to just make enough to get by and pay huge debts at home. Sometimes I wonder if Bangladesh will EVER improve.

Speaking of Bangladeshis, we made the mistake of telling our relatives in Bangladesh just HOW much we paid for a gondola ride in Venice. My uncle almost had a heart attack (his third).

“HOW MUCH? God, you can pay a nouka guy here ten times less and he will take you all over Bangladesh in his boat!”

Somehow, I doubt it’s the same ….

We are due to visit Bangladesh again in December and I am thinking of stopping by Qatar where we have another tons of relatives on the way. Of course key to it will be persuading Mona she can take a week off from visiting her parents in Bangladesh so we can stop by in Doha. Bechari! Sometimes I wish her parents were here so she wouldn’t miss them so much. I really respect women (sometimes) for the sacrifices they go through.

Back in Toronto, and joining work a couple of days back, it was back to the grind. A friend had an accident the day we came, so I was at the ER till 4 at night (and hadn’t slept at all on the flight back) and at 8 I was at work. Needless to say, nothing got done at work. Not that this was out of the ordinary! :-D

Last night I attended a wedding. It was a Bengali guy and a Japanese girl – and she did NOT convert. For some reason this was offensive to many aunties and they decided to boycott the wedding – which just made me more gungho about attending! Honestly, the petty politics of the Bengali community here is quite puzzling. Anyways, it was a nice occasion to meet everyone here and catch up on what’s happening. Ramadan starts in two weeks, and summer is almost over.

Yes, back to the grind indeed – although I am still in vacation mode and can’t honestly wait to go somewhere again!

  • 2. Haleem  |  August 8, 2009 at 3:06 pm

Elena, LOL… not that we didn’t visit the other ‘must-see’ places but extra places were added because they were used for Bollywood movies!

Next year we have to do Spain/Switzerland. Rome was a blast -so much fun.

  • 3. boba  |  August 8, 2009 at 4:48 pm

LOL at your uncles comment! Haha, he sounds a bit like my dear father :)

  • 4. Lat  |  August 8, 2009 at 11:47 pm

You actually take Bollywood seriously! :D The pics look sooo serenely beautifull. And you thought you were alone among foreigners :D Looks like you’ll be globetrotting for a while.I wonder when your next post will be :D

I didn’t know they’re so many Bangladeshis in Italy. Thanks for the update :) I just recently found out that they are numerous clusters of tamil speaking S Indians in France by my friend. Well I guess Europe is one hot destination for Indians too.

  • 5. Amir  |  August 8, 2009 at 11:57 pm

are you caught up yet?!? lol

I hate falling behind…that’s why I would take my laptop with me :D

  • 6. Zarine Mohideen  |  August 9, 2009 at 1:48 am

OMG. You went to Rome? I’m so jealous.. I was just telling my mom how badly I wanted to see the colosseum. And you went!! Anyways hope you had a good time and redaing your post it looks like you dd =)

  • 7. Specs  |  August 9, 2009 at 3:34 am

    Wow, the places look awesome!!!

You guys seem to have had a lot of fun! Everyone’s bee bitten by the travelling bug these days. And from the FB pictures, you people spent a good time sightseeing. :D

    LOL @ ’spot the Bangladeshi’

P.S. Benglai and Japanese… I’ve NEVER…. EVER heard of such a couple! Unique. And great. I don’t get the concept of converting for a marriage just in name. And why that makes people happy. stone me, but good ting she stood her ground. And if she ever converts, may it be for the sake of Allah.

P.P.S. Good luck with the catching up! Kal. LOLZ :D

“One of our games became “Spot the Bangladeshi” in town squares.” hehe V likes to do something similiar when we travel but it’s more spot the brown person to make sure we aren’t the only ones here :D

Capri looks gorgeous, I wish we had gone there now!

Thanks for the mention, I love vacation posting and will have to check Nadia out since I’m very interested in where everyone has been. Oh, you should check out Mezba’s blog, his recent trip photos and posts are awesome!

Boba, haha… and desi fathers all over!

Lat, well Bollywood is fun. :-) Italy was just full of tourists (the places we went) – except Capri. We didn’t see too many desi tourists though … odd. Even here when we were telling our friends they were like “Why Italy, why not France or Switzerland?”.

Amir, I did take our laptop but I can’t do blog updates – too much time wasted on a vacation! If our hotels had internet I would just shoot off an email to my folks saying we are fine etc.

I am not caught up. I just “mark all as read” and start over!

Zarine, welcome to the blog. Yes, we went to Rome and the Coliseum. We had a blast.

Specs, travelling is contagious – I can’t wait till December when we are off again. Even after coming back we are planning short trips within here and there.

Yes, Bengali and Japanese – very strange combo, I wondered if they will serve coconut oil cooked shrimp sushi.

I see no point in forcing a conversion to make other people happy – and I see no point in people boycotting the wedding. If a non-Muslim friend invited me to his wedding would I not go? And so why it’s different in this case? Sometimes people make no sense.

Liya, For some reason other than the vendors we didn’t spot too many brown tourists in Italy when we were there. Even in Rome.

Capri was just too good. It was a decent outing after all the city based stuff.

Nadia’s travel posts, especially to India and for her Umrah, are very good. I have to take tips from them when we do an Indian trip or ever go for Umrah/Hajj, iA.

I will check out Mezba’s posts – have to do all of Europe eventually you know! Your Italian posts were very educational for us.

  • 10. Muslim Girl  |  August 9, 2009 at 1:10 pm

A month ago I would’ve said that Bengali and Japanese is such a new mix – but my uncle just got married to a Japanese girl and he’s Pakistani… so I guess mixes like that do happen =P

Glad you had a fun trip :) . I hate that depressing feeling that happens after coming back from vacation though!

  • 11. susanne430  |  August 9, 2009 at 3:27 pm

Welcome back. I enjoyed hearing about your time in Italy and the pictures are great!

  • 12. Humaira  |  August 9, 2009 at 7:27 pm

Glad to hear you’re back from your trip! And yes, I so want to go to Italy at least once in my life Inshallah.

    Feeling better now thanks!

HAHAHA! I just came back from a weekend trip and I have so many blog posts and emails to catch up on. Makes you realise how much we rely on the internet.

  • 13. Haleem  |  August 9, 2009 at 8:56 pm

Muslim Girl, Yeah it’s a very unique mix – I didn’t even know it was going on! Oh man I got major vacation withdrawal symptoms now.

    Susanne, thanks.

Humairah, And now at work I can’t blog because they banned facebook/wordpress/blogger…. so it has to be from home – and once you get home you are so tired to blog/read blogs/reply.

  • 14. nadia  |  August 10, 2009 at 9:51 am

Welcome back! I just returned from a 30-day long vacation in May, and now everyone is posting about vacations – I want to travel again! Capri looks enchanting.

Oh, and I read December, Bangladesh and Qatar – where’s Dubai? I thought you guys were coming over this year.

Nadia, Capri was really lovely and you should visit!

I am still working on the travel details – we will see how it works out. At the moment Mona’s parents have priority as we want to spend maximum time with them. If we can work it all into our schedule we will. Also money… unfortunately travel is not cheap! :-D

  • 17. daysofarabianlives  |  August 10, 2009 at 10:59 pm

Those pics look gorgeous! I am just as bad – when in Thailand I went to see Bond Island just because of that scene in the james bond movie (I think it was Tomorrow Never Dies?)
I went to Italy just before I started uni… with my mum; I have told Mr A that we will be going there sometime soon – I mean the guy speaks (both) Italian and Greek – I’d be a FOOL not to go!
About the $$ of your gondola ride and your uncle’s reaction; Too funny!
As for going to Qatar: do go – you will enjoy Doha (as I am assuming this is where you’ll go)… I have a few cousins there; it’s hardly Dubai but it is nice!
Bengali & Japanese: I wonder what their children will look like?!
Enjoy reading all those missed blog posts…

  • 18. Haleem  |  August 10, 2009 at 11:14 pm

Daysofarabianlives, just finished catching up on reading most of your posts… why do you have to post only when I am on vacation lol….

yes, in Italy we were told by one guide where they shot the Bond movies, seems like quite a few are shot in Italy.

We do both want to visit the Mykonos Islands in Greece sometime soon.

Yeah, we are visiting Doha, iA.

  • 19. monkey  |  August 13, 2009 at 12:36 pm

Welcome back. I’m glad you had a good time in Italy and Bangladesh.

  • 20. azlin  |  August 13, 2009 at 10:16 pm

I may do Zurich next year. Let see whether we’ll bump into each other :P

  • 21. Haleem  |  August 13, 2009 at 11:21 pm

    Monkey, Azlin, thanks!

    Maybe I will :-)

  • 22. pi  |  August 15, 2009 at 11:50 am

    accident of birth..so true.
and bengali and chinese. very cool.
i think aunties just want something to be annoyed at. or rather something to talk about.
    boycotting multicultural weddings.
    so not cool.

  • 23. pi  |  August 15, 2009 at 11:51 am

    sorry..japanese

  • 24. meow  |  August 17, 2009 at 12:06 am

Everything is so infinitely cheaper back home. Hell if you started comparing you’d have to stop breathing altogether!

  • 25. sf  |  August 17, 2009 at 2:29 pm

There are lots of Bengalis in E. Africa too.

  • 26. Haleem  |  August 26, 2009 at 4:56 am

Pi, lol about the aunties observation. You may be right – something to talk about is what they need.

    Meow, I know!

Sf, really? wow didn’t know that.

  • 27. Karachiite  |  August 26, 2009 at 2:40 pm

Italy is great!! Venice!! shuckss that gondola guy was like even if u wanna pose with the gondola, u gotta pay.. loser big time!!

  • 28. Haleem  |  August 29, 2009 at 11:56 am

Karachite, oh our gondolier was really good, took lots of pics and we paid what we agreed to before. he was really pro.

  • 29. KArachiite  |  August 29, 2009 at 2:24 pm

Thats good, otherwise, Italy, they say, is full of thieves!! ~ :)

  • 30. Haleem  |  September 6, 2009 at 3:41 pm

Karachite, oh, our experience wasn’t like that.

  • 31. sonia  |  September 30, 2009 at 1:01 pm

sounds like a wonderful trip Haleem.
good for you and going to the wedding to make a point! people with such bad will like those Aunties -well who wants them at a celebration anyway! It would have been very strong of her to decide she didn’t want to convert – and right of her to not be bullied into it. Too many people have to do it to ’save face’ and they are the wrong reasons really.

Funny a Bengali guy i grew up with who married a Japanese girl and they both live in Toronto …!

  • 32. Haleem  |  October 4, 2009 at 11:27 am

Sonia, hopefully she will convert sometime but this should be her decision. If someone is inviting me to his wedding genuinely I would attend – that’s my policy.
